A week of bikes

28 Aug

It’s really been more than a week, but the time flew and I feel like it needs to be quickly reviewed.

Wednesday, the 15th, John and I jumped on a plane to head to the south and the three H’s (hazy, hot, and humid). We ended up in Rock Hills, SC at their four-month old Velodrome to time the Elite Omnium Nationals. Loved it! It’s been two years since we’ve worked a track event, and I forgot how fun they are. The facility was beautiful, the people were friendly and helpful, and the weather really wasn’t that bad. With the exception of the rain day which killed my favorite keypad.

We returned home on the 19th with just enough time to do laundry, then catch the finish of Stage 1 of the US Pro Challenge finish in Telluride. Even though I’ve seen several pro races from the announcer’s stage, it was completely different to see the finish in my hometown. So proud of the OC – especially Stephanie Jacquet who KILLED it. We were so over-prepared, it was relaxing in a way.

After that, it was time to pack for the Blue Ribbon Alpine Criterium in Aspen. This is an elite women’s road race that has been run as a stage race in the past. This year, the event organizers were not blessed with sponsorship dollars and the race was reduced to a single criterium. We raced right before the USPCC men’s finish in Aspen came roaring into town. It was fun to play with our friends at Phoenix Sports Technologies gear and help them get their race in the books too.

We headed home on Thursday, and to an unscheduled weekend. Can’t even remember when the last weekend at home was. After doing nothing on Friday, I decided to head out to forage for wild mushrooms. Unfortunately, the drought has left us with very few mushrooms. Either that, or there are a lot of people out there that are getting to them before me.

I was able to gather enough to make a grilled wild mushroom pizza with goat cheese.

This morning, I looked at my Endomondo calendar, and noticed that the last time I rode my bike was almost two weeks ago! I am not even getting close to my big birthday goal. I’m not going to give up, but I’m going to change the focus a bit. Now, it’s going to be about fun and how many giggles I can get in one ride.

I started climbing one of my favorite trails. After a bit of that, I’d had enough and was luck would have it, I discovered a new trail. Well, me and three other guys. We all ended up on a road. The gentlemen were looking for Alta Lakes. I, on the other hand knew exactly where I was and decided to continue on the ski area road. This particular road I haven’t been on in the summer, and it is GORGEOUS. I think I’m going to have to make it one of my fun, short loops from now on.

On one of my descents, I got a little too close to a tree and left some skin behind. Ever the skier, the first thing that popped into my head was “Why didn’t they design break-a-way trees???”

Ah well, giggles and fun. And that’s what it should be all about.
